Mix It Up Day
On Tuesday, October 25th the members of Student Council and the Leadership Class are encouraging all students at Hilldale Middle School to “Mix It Up.” We will join thousands of other schools participating in a tradition with a 14-year track record of reducing prejudice and improving intergroup relations.
Sitting with someone new at lunch is a simple concept, but it can have a profound impact; it has been shown that positive interactions across racial and ethnic lines can reduce bias and prejudice. Based on surveys, we know that Mix It Up at Lunch Day also raises student awareness about divisions within schools and encourages students to interact with people outside their normal social circles. These lines exist for many reasons- habit, friendship, status, and fear. The simple space of a cafeteria table is, for many of us, a comfort zone where we can be ourselves with those who know us best. For others, the lunchroom with all its boundaries is a world of familiar strangers, rigid expectations, pressures of its own.
The Mix-It-Up Campaign starts with a simple action step: committing to break out of the lunch-buddy rut for one day and see what happens. On Oct. 25th, Mix-It-Up at Lunch Day, students across the country will step out of their comfort zones, take a new seat, and begin a process of exploring and crossing group boundaries. Be a part of it!
For Lunch Students on October 25:
Students from the Leadership class (3rd hour) will be marking tables in the cafeteria with months of the year. Students should set at the table by their Birthday Month for a lunchroom activity.
Everyone should bring a pencil to the cafeteria at lunch for a special contest. - A Student Search activity will be planned with prizes!
As soon as you enter the cafeteria pick up a form and begin the game !
Everyone is encouraged to dress “Mix Matched” for the day.
