6th Grade Course Descriptions

Core Classes

 

6th Grade English

Sixth grade English is designed to prepare students to understand the eight parts of speech, vocabulary, and writing skills to communicate what the student has learned. This course will cover skills/objectives listed on the Oklahoma Academic State Standards for vocabulary, language, and writing. Students will be expected to write a variety of essays and a research paper throughout the year.

 

6th Grade Math

This 6th grade math course covers key concepts such as Numbers and Operations, Algebra Reasoning, Geometry and Measurement, and Data and Probability. These concepts will be covered as outlined in the Oklahoma Academic Standards set out by the State Department of Education. Students will complete the course by completing daily assignments. These assignments will be accessed through use of our textbooks, USA Test Prep and Star Math.  Students will be required to complete daily assignments, work in groups, and participate in class.

 

6th Grade Reading

The purpose of sixth grade reading is to provide students with a foundation of literary skills. Students will read a variety of literature, including short stories, novels, plays, and poems. Students will work closely with words in order to make gains in vocabulary and spelling and will learn the basic skills of literary analysis.

 

6th Grade Science

6th Grade Science is the entry course into an integrated and spiraling middle school science curriculum. In this grade level, students will examine the basic principles of physical science, earth science, and biological science through actively engaging in scientific methods and practices. Students will be given the opportunity to enter into the Hilldale Middle School Science Fair (NOT REQUIRED). They will also have the opportunity to move on to the Muskogee Regional Science Fair if they qualify. Students will engage in labs and activities that will enhance their curiosity for learning.

6th Grade Western Geography

The course will study the 5 themes of geography. It will examine the way in which the environment influences and impacts the development and evolution of human culture. Various cultures and heritages will be introduced to students. The interaction of geography with cultural, economic, political and social factors will be examined. Countries of the western hemisphere will be studied.

 

Electives

 

Round Robin

Round Robin includes four 9 weeks courses: Art, Keyboarding, P.E., and Native American Studies. Art is designed to allow students to experiment with a variety of two-dimensional art forms, art history, and art criticism. Students will experience a variety of different mediums including but not limited to drawing, painting, and printmaking. Students will begin to explore the world of art and discover who they are as an artist. Keyboarding focuses on touch typing. Students are introduced to basic touch typing techniques. P.E. focuses on motor skills and healthy enhancing activities. Native American studies focuses on the history and culture of Native Americans in North America.

 

Basketball

The purpose of this program is to develop basketball skills such as dribbling, passing, catching, shooting, and rebounding. Additionally, students may play competitive basketball games against other schools.

 

Beginning Band

This class is for 6th grade students who have never played a band instrument. All performances are required (at least two per year). The directors choose what instrument the student should play, but take into account interests of the student. All students will be tested to determine on which instrument they will achieve the best results. 

 

Chorus

Chorus is an introduction to chorus techniques with emphasis on vocal skills, music reading, and performance. Chorus will be available for any student interested in choir in grades 6 through 8. Students do not have to audition to be in this choir. There are 2 concerts (winter and spring). Some outside of school practice and performance required. Attendance at all rehearsals/concerts is mandatory.

 

Computers 1

During this course, students will learn how to type by touch and use Microsoft Office. The class focuses on Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Excel.

 

Physical Education

Students learn motor skills, personal and social development, and healthy enhancing activities. They also learn responsible health and safety behavior. Students enrolled in athletics may not enroll in this class.  

 

Title I Reading

Title I Reading is designed to assist students who need extra help in Reading. This class focuses on individual reading skills in an effort to prepare students for the state reading test in April. Instruction is based on individual weaknesses, but includes phonics, spelling, grammar, literary analysis, and fluency.

 

English Learners

This class is offered to those students who have been identified as speaking another language in their homes. The focus of this class is to prepare students for the annual WIDA exam that is given every February to test for English language fluency. The focus of this class is on English speaking, writing, listening, and reading.
