National Summer Transportation Institute @ NSU

DEADLINE TO APPLY - 4/21/23

What:  National Summer Transportation Institute

When:  June 5 - June 16, 2023

Where:  NSU's Broken Arrow campus with two nights and days on NSU's Tahlequah campus

I'm Dr. Doug Martin, professor at NSU in Tahlequah.  We have a great opportunity coming up for high school students, who will be enrolled in grades 9 - 12 during the academic year 23-24.

Northeastern State University is partnering with the Federal Highway Administration and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to present a two-week (June 5 - June 16), STEM based camp focusing on the U.S. transportation system.

The program will be presented in a day camp format, so participants can experience the STEM labs at NSU Tahlequah, the camp also includes two overnight stays and two days on NSU's Tahlequah campus.  Other days of the camp will be headquartered on NSU's Broken Arrow campus.  We will provide bus transportation from the Tahlequah/Muskogee area for students from these areas.

The camp will focus on every major mode of transportation including highway, rail, water, air, and even cover the future of transportation by exploring our country's renewed interest in space travel.

Activities over the two weeks will include field trips to the Port of Catoosa, Tulsa International Airport, a bridge construction project, Tulsa Tech (truck driving simulator), and a trip focusing on rail transportation.

In addition to the field experiences we will provide a variety of STEM based and career development activities including an ACT Prep workshop, STEM Laboratory activities, projects in NSU's robotics lab, and a discussion of driver safety presented by the Oklahoma Safety Council.   Each participant in the driver safety class will receive a certificate of completion that may be used to receive an insurance discount.    There will be much, much more available to participants! It is going to be a busy, fun, exciting, eye opening learning experience without the burden of exams and graded projects.

Admission to the camp will be competitive.  Only 30 students will be accepted.  However, for the 30 fortunate students who participate there is NO CHARGE--IT IS FREE.  Deadline for applying is April 21.

Participants also have the option of receiving college credit for attending and participating in all camp activities.  Enrolling for college credit from NSU is not required and will not influence admissions decisions.

Attached is the camp brochure.  If you have students who are interested in attending, have questions, or would like to apply for admission please have them scan the QR code on the brochure.
